Chapter Six

Death on Hellion Ridge

“Who are you?”

Harold Pettridge stirred and shifted painfully from his back onto his side. Sweat beaded his rutted brow and ran into the hollows of his cheeks.

“Stop the talk,” Jamie Lancer called out, but Buck Halliday ignored him and crossed to the bunk.

“The name’s Halliday. I was the one at the window when you rode in. You’ve been shot, so try to take it easy. We figured the wound was enough to kill you but maybe you’ve got more grit than we thought.”

Pettridge’s brow crowded his gray eyes. “I remember now,” he mumbled and then nodded, understanding coming into his eyes. “Feller dressed up too fancy for my liking. I didn’t like the look of him from the start. Then I felt this terrible pain in my back. I remember it all, now.”

Pettridge struggled onto an elbow, his lips drawn tight, his breath wheezing from his lungs. Halliday was about to help him but Pettridge gestured him away, then he pulled himself up with a great effort. When he managed to get himself into a sitting position, his body sagged and he closed his eyes. But after a few moments, he sighed and said;

“What’s happened after that, Halliday? It doesn’t take much to work out that you and I are prisoners here. Where is my granddaughter?”

“With Davis. He’s going to try to stop your wagon and rob it, using her as bait. I’m afraid there’s nothin’ much we can do to stop it.”

“You’ve got that right,” Lancer chimed in. “Now, I’m askin’ you two to shut up, like you’ve been told.”

“Take a shot at us and you could ruin everythin’,” Halliday said. “Davis wouldn’t be happy with you if that happens. He has plans of taking that wagon. One gunshot would alert the guards.”

Lancer again looked unsure of himself. “So shut up and that won’t have to happen. You heard Mr. Davis.”

“We’re not going to be quiet, Jamie, so you’ll just have to shoot,” Halliday said. “Pull that trigger and make one hell of a noise. Then the guards will come storming in and you and Davis will end up with nothing. Not that you’ll be losin’ much, I’ll wager. Davis means to kill you just as soon as you’re on the trail and he has the money.”

The youngster shook his head. “He won’t do that. You’re just sayin’ that. It’s him and me, together, all the time. That’s how he said it is ... and that’s how it’ll be.”

Halliday’s laugh was full of scorn. “And where do you think he’ll take you, Jamie? To his friends with all their fancy clothes and fine manners? Forget it. Davis plans to use you until he gets his hands on the money and then he’ll leave you ... probably with a bullet in your back like Harold here. Do you think he’d risk having a mulehead like you hangin’ onto his shirttails? He’d be afraid of you tyin’ him down.”

“Mr. Davis is my friend.”

“But can you guarantee he’ll
